The Most Beautiful Song

By Jenny Pfister

The twelfth chapter of Isaiah is a hymn of praise composed to celebrate the hope of the glorious reign of the Holy One of Israel, the Messiah. In the midst of deep trouble and dark nights there was a hope for the Jews…the coming of a Savior, Jesus. We have this hope now…a Savior Who is with us in the most difficult moments of our lives. That alone is worthy of our praise!

Have you ever been ministered to by a song you heard on the radio? Has a song sung in church touched your heart in a way that mere words never could? What is it about music that reaches into places of our hearts that are in need of a touch of the Holy Spirit(See WORD WISDOM for a deeper study of Spirit)

We get patriotic goosebumps when we hear the National Anthem played as the flag is being raised over Olympic athletes. We recall special and treasured memories when a song from our past rings within our ears. And we are strengthened and lifted when we hear a song that speaks to our need for Christ.

Is it any wonder that God Himself has a song for us…and that He is that song? Psalm 118 says that:

The Lord is my strength and song, and He has become my salvation. (Ps.118:14 NKJV)

The word song means, “an instrumental interlude to celebrate and praise.” In our deepest need and darkest night, God comes as an interlude of Light with a divine melody. God is that spiritual, sometimes inaudible music that fills us constantly. That is why there is always a song on our lips and music in our hearts. Even when we are not aware, there is a song of praise within us…God Himself.

The psalmist further says:

The Lord will command His lovingkindness in the daytime, and in the night His song shall be with me—a prayer to the God of my life. (Ps.42:8 NKJV)

In this verse, the word song means, “singing.” In those difficult “night times” of our lives God speaks…He sings to us. He knows that in those times we need to hear the Voice of assurance, and peace, and hope. And in that darkness comes the Light of His voice.

What does He sing? Psalm 32 has the answer:

You are my hiding place; You shall preserve me from trouble; You shall surround me with songs of deliverance. Selah. (Ps.32:7 NKJV)

Deliverance! He sings deliverance! That word means, “escape.” He sings songs that open a way of escape around us. He surrounds us with a Way through every difficult and seemingly impossible moment. He envelopes us with the way to peace…the way to hope…the way to love…and the way to the Light…Jesus.

There has always been a rhythm to life. How much more amazing is it that we know the melody of life…that sweet and beautiful song that our Lord sings over us. In those moments when our eyes cannot see the hand of God, our ears can hear the heart of God.

The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; He will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing. (Zeph.3:17 NKJV)

How beautiful is that song…the song within us, around us, and through us. Amen.
