Power of Agreement

By Jenny Pfister

If you are a Star Trek fan, you are very familiar with the Vulcan Mind Meld. For the rest of us unlearned humans, this is a foreign term. The Vulcan Mind Meld (used only by Vulcans like Mr. Spock) was a telepathic link between two individuals, allowing for the exchange of thoughts, thus in essence allowing the participants to become one mind. In Christian circles, we would call that the Power of Agreement! (See WORD WISDOM for a deeper study of one)

What does that really mean? What does it look like, walking in agreement? Let’s start with defining the terms. The word together means, “a unit, that is, unitedly.” It indicates a setting apart of a relationship. The word agreed means, “to fix, appoint, assemble, meet, set, betroth; to meet, to meet by appointment, to gather, assemble.” It indicates a setting apart of time.

Together, God is showing us a beautiful picture of agreement: a sanctified relationship and an appointed time resulting in power. I’ll take that any day! God did not put all of the promises about prayer in the Bible just to fill up space. They are there for our benefit…they are there for our instruction…they are there for us to seize and act upon.

Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. (Matt.18:19-20)

God has given us a weapon of power and authority to accomplish mighty things in His name. We may be mighty in prayer alone (which we are!) but we can be mightier with someone joining their faith with ours. When someone agrees with us in prayer, there is an exponential power surge!

How could one chase a thousand, and two put ten thousand to flight, unless their Rock had sold them, and the Lord had surrendered them? (Deut.32:30)

Did you catch that? There is a ten-fold power increase when two come together! When you have been laboring and travailing in prayer about something and nothing seems to be happening, you may need to find someone to pray in agreement with you. That kind of unity is a powerful spiritual dynamic.

When two or more faith-filled believers come together in agreement, Jesus promises to be with them. What a promise! Consider that for a moment…His power in the midst of your agreement! What enemy can stand against that?!

For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them. (Matt.18:20)

There is a downside to agreement…the enemy. Because God blesses unity and His presence is with those who are in agreement, the enemy works especially hard to create disunity and separate people. Satan uses strife, anger, jealousy, and offence to create disharmony among believers.

For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. (Jas.3:16)

Yet beyond the power of agreement with one another in prayer is an even greater force…acting in agreement with God! He has given us a point of agreement…His mighty Word, the Bible! All we have to do is agree with it, believe it, and act upon it. Let’s agree to agree in the power of agreement, and agree with God! That’s a victorious mind meld! Amen!
