A Tasty Morsel
What does it mean to taste something? It’s normally something we have never tried before and we take a little bit of it to determine if we will like it or not. First we look at it, probably smell it, then we put just a little in our mouths. At this point, we either swallow it or spit it out!
Well, that is much like what we do in the spiritual realm too. We try a piece of God here and a morsel of God there. We examine it and decide whether we like it or not. We either swallow it in belief or spit it out in doubt. Eventually, we simply stop tasting anything because we like what we like and we don’t want to try anything new. Sound familiar? But the Lord says to “taste and see that He is good.” I don’t believe He means just one taste and then no more. Our tastes change over time. What I didn’t like as a child, I really enjoy now. I like my meat cooked differently now. I like a different salad dressing. I’ve outgrown sugary kid’s drinks (mostly). I no longer enjoy sour things. Tastes change.
So why would I want to try anything new spiritually, like new way to pray or to study His Word? Or a new style of worship? Perhaps even a new place to sit in church?! Because God is always doing a new thing and He wants us to taste it. But not just for the sake of tasting…but to see that He is good.
Oh, that men would give thanks to the Lord for His goodness, and for His wonderful works to the children of men! For He satisfies the longing soul, and fills the hungry soul with goodness. (Ps.107:8-9 NKJV)
Now the word taste means, “to perceive, to try by the tongue with a view to consumption, to evaluate with discernment.” You see, God gives us discernment to know that which is from Him and that which is not. We have the ability to spit out the lies and untruths of the world. And with that same discernment, we can enjoy what is from Him and swallow it.
Your words were found, and I ate them, and Your word was to me the joy and rejoicing of my heart; For I am called by Your name, O Lord God of hosts. (Jer.15:16 NKJV)
How sweet are Your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth! (Ps.119:103)
The Lord is inviting us to His banqueting table to feast on His goodness (Song 2:4). He wants us to taste and judge all that He is offering and wanting to give us. The scriptures tell us that there are so many things He wants us to taste: His Word (Ps.119:103), a good Word (Heb.6:5), the heavenly gift (Heb.6:4), power (Heb.6:5), and His banquet (Lk.14:24)
His love is so great for us that He promises one thing we will never have to taste…death! Praise God!
Assuredly, I say to you, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the Son of Man coming in His kingdom. (Matt.16:28)
His Word declares the He brought us to His banqueting table that He prepared in the presence of our enemies (Ps.23:5) to partake of the table of the Lord. What a feast! Jesus is the feast! He is the Bread of Life and the Living Water. Oh, that we would taste and see that He is good, and hunger and thirst for more! (Matt.5:6). Now that’s a tasty morsel! Amen!
