A Need for Seed
By Jenny Pfister & Betsy Leigh
In the parable of the sower (Mk.4) we see a picture of the scattering of seed into various places and circumstances. Most often, we look at that parable as we, the church, sowing the Word of God into the world (Lk.8:1). But what if we look at God as the Sower and ourselves as the receiver of the seed? Well, that changes everything!
God is constantly wanting to sow holy, purposeful seed into us—seeds that will “increase the fruit of your righteousness.” (2 Cor.9:10) The Lord sows bountifully into our lives with one desired goal…to increase our righteous fruit, for us to enjoy and share with others.
Now may He who supplies seed to the sower, and bread for food, supply and multiply the seed you have sown and increase the fruits of your righteousness (2 Cor. 9:10 NKJV)
Now we know that the seed is the Word, and the Word is Jesus (Jn.1:1), so the seed is Jesus! And that seed is incorruptible, and un-decaying. It is a seed so pure, so holy, so divine that there is nothing but life, holiness and power in it (1 Jn.3:9).
But wait! Why don’t we live that way, in victory? Well, it’s perhaps because we put other seed in as well…our own corrupted seed. The Bible warns, “You shall not sow your vineyard with different kinds of seed, lest the yield of the seed which you have sown and the fruit of your vineyard be defiled (Deut.22:9 NKJV) Ouch! If we try to plant seed where God is trying to plant seed, we become defiled…and so does our fruit!
When we drop our own seed, that is, our own ideas, our own wills, our own dreams, our own desires, we pollute the holy seed that God has sown in us!
We must make sure that when God is ready to sow, we are ready to receive. Hosea tells us to “break up your fallow ground, for it is time to seek the Lord.” (Hos.10:12). We must have fertile ground into which God can scatter His amazing seed.
Now, back to the parable. Though God is constantly sowing seed into us, not all of it will take root and grow into a beautiful, fruitful tree. Some falls on the side of the road, but then birds come and snatch it away (Mk. 4:4). That is Satan stealing that Word.
And these are the ones by the wayside where the word is sown. When they hear, Satan comes immediately and takes away the word that was sown in their hearts. (Mark 4:15 NKJV)
Some falls on rocky ground of little depth but is burned up by the sun. This happens when affliction comes (Mk.4:16-17). Some falls among the thorns but is choked by those thorns. This is caused when the cares of the world overshadow His Word (Mk.4:18-19).
These likewise are the ones sown on stony ground who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with gladness; and they have no root in themselves, and so endure only for a time. Afterward, when tribulation or persecution arises for the word’s sake, immediately they stumble. Now these are the ones sown among thorns; they are the ones who hear the word, and the cares of this world, the deceitfulness of riches, and the desires for other things entering in choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. (Mk. 4:16-19 NKJV)
But some falls on beautiful, valuable ground that springs up and bears 30, 60, and 100 fold return!
But these are the ones sown on good ground, those who hear the word, accept it, and bear fruit: some thirtyfold, some sixty, and some a hundred. (Mk. 4:20 NKJV)
When we allow God access and liberty to sow His seed in us, and when we nurture that seed to full fruition, we have an amazing promise from Him: “He shall be like a tree planted by the rivers of water, that brings forth it’s fruit in His due season…and whatever he does will prosper! (Ps. 1:3) (See WORD WISDOM for a deeper study of prosper) AMEN!!!
